Sellout

It looks like our government in the rush to meet a self imposed deadline for the writing of the Iraqi Constitution is planning to sell out the Iraqi people. I have covered this before so I am not going to go into great detail. Basically sharia will be the law of the land and women's rights are out the door. The rights of minority religions are out the door.

If you want the latest read The Big Pharoh.

What you need to do is contact your Rep., your Senators, and the President and give them an earful. You might also like to help clear the fog at Foggy Bottom. Links below.

Yeah...hmm...I am torn on this issue. I find it disgusting that they lynch homosexuals in Iran, stone women to death for supposedly infidelity, and well, basically reduce women to property...HOWEVER, I believe that law follows mentality of people. I don't think that by making a law, people will change their minds, but conversely, the mentality needs to change, before things are made to law.
We were still lynching blacks in the South during the 20th century, and women were still officially 2nd class citizens when it came to voting and a whole lot of other things.
The preamble of our consitution says we are in the pursuit of "a more perfect union", not that we had perfect union from Day One. And that is something we continue to strive for now in America.
And I believe that we can't just go into Iraq, and say: hey, we did the hard work, we toppled your dictator, and we figured out all this backward crap you guys still consider okay, but it's not. So just take it from us, and follow our lead.
On the one hand, we went into Iraq to protect America...and having a more Sunni influenced Iraqi Constitution would be better for us, but it wouldn't really be representing most of the country...and until the rest of the country has that mentality, what are the chances of them protecting and upholding that?

I believe it is better in the long term for the Iraqis to have a Constitution that is backwards according to Western standards and slowly progress to a "more perfect" one, than to force upon them a perfect one from Day One, and expect them to uphold it, however repulsive these ideas seem to us.
